Quabbin Hike & Tour
A Step Back in Time

Date: TBA
Price: $75.00

Whether it's the magnificent view from the New Salem overlook or the vastness of the reservoir as seen from the Enfield lookout, the Quabbin Reservoir has a great deal to offer visitors. Our trip will take you "A Step Back in Time" to what was once known as the Swift River Valley. We will stop by the visitors center in Belchertown, take in the views at both the Enfield and New Salem lookouts, visit Quabbin Park Cemetery where over 6,000 graves were relocated from the valley, hike into Dana Common, one of the four towns lost to the Quabbin Reservoir, stop off for lunch at the quaint Petersham Country Store, and visit the Swift River Valley Historical Society.

Hiking portion of trip: During your trip you will learn basic historical information about the reservoir and how it became known as the accidental wilderness. Your hike into Dana Common will be easy but lengthy, on a flat gravel surface for approximately 3 miles, or 2 hours, round trip. Along the way your guide will share with you several points of interest about the people who once lived in the Swift River Valley and the sacrifices they made. We also encourage you to explore the things that might be of interest to you along the way.

Modified Quabbin Trip (minimal walking if desired)
A Step Back in Time

A modified version of our Quabbin Hike & Tour, this trip takes a more leisurely "Step Back in Time" to what was formerly known as the Swift River Valley. We'll follow the path of the previous trip, providing all of the scenery and history along the way but replacing our walk into Dana Common with a slide presentation held at the Visitors Center in Belchertown and adding a stroll out to Windsor dam (if desired). We will take in the views at both the Enfield and New Salem lookouts, visit the Quabbin Park Cemetery where over 6,000 graves were relocated from the Valley, stop off for lunch at the Petersham Country store, and visit the Swift River Valley Historical Society. This trip is modified for those who do not wish to take an active 3-mile hike.
