Come and explore historic stone walls in the Petersham area with "Robert Thorson" Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut and Author of several books; The first field guide to, "Exploring Stone Walls," "Stone By Stone," and "Stone Wall Secrets." We'll gain knowledge regarding clues to their origin, learn the importance of conserving these fascinating stone structures, and acquire an appreciation as we become more familiar with them. We'll stop off for lunch at the quaint Petersham Country Store in the picturesque town of Petersham, MA. Later we'll visit Harvard Forest's, "Fisher Museum," displaying internationally acclaimed dioramas portraying history, conservation and management of central New England forests.

Hiking portion of trip: During your trip you will learn the importance of preservation, identification, and ways to manage stone walls. Your hike to each of these stone structures will be easy with few rolling paths in and amongst forested terrain. At each stone wall site your guide will share with you interesting facts about these charming stone structures. We also encourage you to explore the things that might be of interest to you along the way.
