"Snowshoe Trek" to former prison camps at Barre Falls
Dates TBA
Time 10:00 a.m.
Price $45
Snowshoe Rentals $6 per person

Come and experience the magical beauty of a wintry forest, while we keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. Learn the basics of snowshoeing, as we discover the history of the former prison camps that existed back in the early 1900's.

Our trek will begin at the Barre Falls Dam located in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. Here your guide will briefly review logistical information before we start the day. Barre Falls is part of the Ware river water shed, which empties into the Quabbin Reservoir. Our trek is approximately 3 miles in length, and should take approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. to complete (give or take depending on the group). You will be on a relatively flat surface, with a few moderately easy inclines. To end our day we'll enjoy a delicious bowl of hot soup and sandwiches to melt away the chill.

Trip Includes:
  • Lunch (hot soup, drinks, and sandwiches)
  • Bottled water available for tour
  • Quabbin Reservoir/Barre Dam/and prison camps information
  • Learn the basic fundamentals of snowshoeing
  • Professional, pleasant and well informed guides
Hiking activity rating:   Easy to moderate

What clothing/equipment should I bring? Layers of clothing are always best. The first layer should be, synthetic or thermal underwear, such as polypropylene. The middle layer could be fleece, wool sweater, wool pants. The top or outer layer should be a nylon or sympatex jacket and pants that will protect you from the snow, and wind. A warm or insulated hat, thermo socks and gloves or mittens. A pair of insulated hiking boots. Some extra suggested items that may be needed would be sunglasses (for day trips), hand and boot warmers, sunscreen, a day pack or fanny pack, a head lamp (for the evening trips). And of course snowshoes are available to rent for $6 per person.
