Snowshoe Trek/Gathering Inn - January 2010

Have you ever experienced snowshoeing in a mystical winter forest, guided by the light of a brilliantly lit moon? Come along with other like minded women and experience the fun on a moonlit night!

MOON CIRCLE ADVENTURES

THE GATHERING INN and ACTIVE BY NATURE have teamed up to provide "Moon Circle Adventures" a guided outdoor adventure along with teaching about the cycles of the moon, the cycles of the seasons, and how they relate to women's life cycles.

Since women live their lives and practice their spirituality in a circular fashion, it is no small wonder all the cycles of the physical world are related.  The moon, the seasons, and a woman's life all have those times of new birth and new beginnings, of growth, of mothering and nurturing or blossoming into fullness, and then the waning of years when the greatest wisdom comes forth, and we reach the time of being still and preparing again for new birth.

One of the deepest ways to get in touch with the rhythm of those cycles is to use our bodies and our senses to get in touch with Nature, to see what our bodies are capable of no matter what our age, and revel in the exhilarating feeling of being at one with yourself and the Creator.  All the events are appropriate both for women who are physically "fully active" and for women who are "fully marinated" ....notice we don't say older.  Don't let a fear of "keeping up" keep you away.

The snowshoe portion of the trip will take place at Barre Falls Dam. Your guide will briefly review logistical information before we start our trek. Barre Falls is part of the Ware river water shed, which empties into the Quabbin Reservoir. Our trip is approximately 3 miles in length, and should take approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. to complete (give or take depending on the group). You will be on a relatively flat surface, with a few moderately easy inclines. It's a good idea to bring along a headlamp if you have one.

Hiking activity rating: Easy to moderate

Trip Includes:
  • Bottled water available for hike
  • Quabbin reservoir/Barre Dam/Prison camp Information
  • Learn basic fundamentals of Snowshoeing
  • Workshop: cycles of the moon/cycles of the season and how they relate to women's life cycles
  • Safety information and equipment training
  • Dinner, hot drink and snacks

What clothing/equipment should I bring?

Layers of clothing are always best. The first layer should be synthetic or thermal underwear, such as polypropylene. The middle layer could be fleece, wool sweater, wool pants. The top or outer layer should be a nylon or sympatex jacket and pants that will protect you from snow and wind. A warm or insulated hat, thermo socks and gloves or mittens. A pair of insulated hiking boots. Some extra suggested items that may be needed would be sunglasses (for day trips), hand and boot warmers, sunscreen, a day pack or fanny pack, bottled water, and a head lamp (for the evening trips). And of course snowshoes, which are available to rent.

Optional: Make it a real get-away experience by staying overnight at The Gathering Inn for an additional $75 per person (includes breakfast).  Or come on Friday night and rest up for the trip ahead.  Call the Gathering Inn at 978-820-1139 to make reservations.
